Out of the Shire?
I can't remember if anyone brought this up in class or not, but at the end of chapter 8, Merry talks about the Prancing Pony in Bree. I didn't really notice it until tonight. He says "My people go out there now and again." I was just wondering what everyone else though since we've discussed a lot in class how Hobbits don't really get out of the Shire.

Hobbits do mostly stay within their own borders. He wasn't talking about his people being the Hobbits as a whole race, but more of his family the Brandybucks. Remember though, Frodo is a Brandybuck too. Maybe it runs in the blood.
I thought it was interesting too because on their way from the shire to Bree, creatures the hobbits encounter are surprised to see hobbits traveling. So even though the Brandybuck hobbits travel, they don't seem to travel very much.
The inn keeper said that he gets hobbits from time to time, so they must do some lite traveling. Maybe they just stay close incase of trouble.
Didn't they also say in the book that some hobbits live in Bree?
There seems to be a sufficient number of Hobbits staying at the Prancing Pony for him to keep some hobbit-size beds.
As much as we have talked about the hobbits don't get out of the shire much, hobbits are also child-like and enjoy exploring without venturing too far. To them, a trip to the "prancing pony" is a huge adventure, don't you think?
Also, since there are already hobbits in Bree, it's very possible that they would have relatives visit them there, so that could include hobbits other than Brandybucks.
