I remember much of this from reading Eaters of the Dead a few years ago. Did Crichton take parts directly from the text, or did he paraphrase? I don't have the book, and I can't remember. It seems to me upon reading this that parts of Ibn Fadlan's text were put directly into Eaters of the Dead.
