Endings
We were talking about how the ring comes to an end. I have an idea for an ending… I always thought it would have been cool if we could change the part where Gandalf and company leave Middle Earth. Right as they leave on the boat, I thought it would be neat if they made Gandalf into a bad guy. Have the camera zoom in on Gandalf’s ring. Then have Gandalf smile as glowing letters appear on his ring. I like it… Gandalf as the bad guy and another movie/book. What do you think… Any ideas for another ending?

I don't see why Frodo had to leave the shire. I know that his experience with the ring had changed him and that living in the shire probably wasn't as good as he rememberd, but I would have liked Frodo to live out his days amongst Sam and his friends.
I can understand Frodo needing to leave the Shire. I think many people have experienced similar feelings after moving away from home for the very first time. When you come back things seem much different than you remember.
I think it goes back to a discussion we had in class early in the semester about past experiences shaping who you are at this instance. Up until the journey Frodo (and Sam, Merry, and Pippen) only knew about life within the Shire. After they had experienced war, tragically losing a leader, mortal fear, etc, their outlook on life in the Shire had to change because their outlook on life changed.
For Frodo, his outlook changed so much that he couldn't live that simple, carefree life of the Shire any longer.
I felt that Frodo's leaving the Shire was necessary for him. Not because he had grown or changed as a person and developed new outlooks on life, but rather because the ring had physically left a mark on him. After carrying the ring for so long he was no longer able to find peace in middle earth and had to go in order to relieve his burden.
I can see why Frodo left the Shire. He was basically scarred for life because of his experieces he had to deal with. I think it would of been a nice ending just to end him back in the shire, and they lived happily ever after. But I guess there is a reason Tolkien decided to do it this way instead. Frodo needed something different to fall back into, the shire was just to easy.
I can see why Frodo would have needed to get away from the Shire, but also, I think it could have helped him get over all that had happened. Maybe he could have gotten married, had children, and told his stories to his kids and grandkids. Also, Sam would need to be nearby so they could have raised their families together...I think it was sad how it ended.
It seems to me that, by the time they reach home, the story is no longer about Frodo. He does not need to stay in the Shire, except if he wanted to stay for Sam, Merry, and Pippin, because his role is done. Like Gandalf he's no longer necessary to the continuation of life (or, in symbols ... the story. Frodo passed the book onto Sam for finishing). I think Frodo chooses to leave because he now has realized that his place is with Bilbo and Gandalf, travellers to the end.
I wish Frodo would have stayed in the Shire. Sam and him were so close. It had to have been hard for both of them for Frodo to leave, but I guess Sam does now have his wife to think of instead of Frodo.
I think when Frodo returned to the Shire he he felt an awful hollowness inside him. The ring left an emptiness that could not be replaced with Frodo's old life. He had to leave his home behind because it reminded him of the fact that he no longer had the ring, and the world he lived in was more innocent than the actual world outside.
Rocky, your idea is not a happy one. Gandalf is like the old grandpa (stern yet loving) who is there to save the day. I think ending the story/movie with Gandalf changing to a villian would have ruined it for me....sad.
Lynds, it would be so fun though...the best vilians are always made from the best heroes.
