Dwarves

Question: What are the dwarves doing through all this? Are they just hanging out in the mountains, letting the wars wage while Men fight and die on their behalf? Do they have their own troubles and are too few in numbers to send an army? Other than Gimli, they make no mention of them. Any ideas?

Pretty much. They're a bit xenophobic and isolationist. Not to mention greedy.

Maybe they don't know what is going on. A lot of the peoples of middle earth seemed to be oblivious to the situation until one of the fellowship members shows up. I know Gimli is there but he may only represent a small number of dwarves.

So, I think that everyone that showed up to the Council of Elrond had a reason for being there. They were all looking for help and guidance. But why did Gimli come? I know one of his relatives was in attendance, but why did Gimli feel the need to attend? This is something that has long confused me and I have not had time to read too much into it. Any ideas?

I have always woundered about that to. Where are the dwarfs? The only thing i could come up with is that they tried to show us the dwarf in the caves of moria but they were all destroyed. Maybe there is some othere dwarfs else were living in their caves but that they are oblivious to everything because they general only care about treasure and them selfs. Gimili was summoned to the council wich is probabley the only reason he is there.

i realise that its been 4 years since this was asked but i just came across it in my research, Gimli was sent by his people from Dale to warn Elrond after a failed attempt from Sauron to try and get them to join him, the Dwarves themselves don't appeare in the Lord of the Rings, however, they do have a final battle at the same time as the battle on the feilds of Minas tirith, in it Dain (now 250 years old) fought off an orc army and helped protect the villlage and the Lonley mountin.
