Power in Small Size?

During the Council of Elrond, I sort of got the idea that one race has faith to handle a situation pretty much only in itself, and does not really trust any one else. Yet all agree to trust Frodo, the small little hobbit, with the Ring. The hobbits continually surprise the others with their ability to "bounce back" and to take on hardships not easily thought of halflings. Aragorn has made at least three exclamations about his opinion, usually with something like "You're strong for your size," or "I never thought such a small hobbit could have so much courage." Is it all/only forshadowing?

And, the Ring is a small object that has a lot of power. Sauron's Ring can destroy the earth, but rings are also important gifts, like in Beowulf. Anyone see any connections, or other ideas?

I think this hearkens back to an earlier post about the effect of evil on one who has little to no ambition besides doing good for himself and others (bilbo, frodo) and those who have ambition and power in themselves (sauron, aragorn, gandalf, boromir) Why are these characters affected so much by the ring's power and not frodo? Is it size? don't think so. I think it has to do with where the heart is in the matter. Do you intend good or do you intend power. I personally think the only way frodo can escape the power of the ring is that his whole mission is to distroy it so he is naturaully against it from the beginning, though it does serve his purpose a couple times during their journey.

I agree on your comment about the Elves trusting Frodo, I think since they can see more meaning in life, since they are on some other level than the rest of middle earth. The Elves know Frodo can be trusted and let him go on with the ring.

I think that they also trust Frodo though because hobbits are the only type of people that would most likely not be corrupted by the ring. Not only is he courageous and all that, but he is Simple. No extraordinary purposes in life to gain power, just plain a simple is the way of the hobbit. I think that that makes him also very trustworthy. He won't abuse the power of the ring.

I have to agree that the hobbit is the perfect choice for not being corrupted by the power of the ring. Like Zack mentioned sauron, gandalf, boromir or anyone with the knowledge of how to use the power or those seeking power are the ones most likely to fall too the ring. If you think about it hobbits are completely isolated and dont even want to know whats going on outside the shire, as far as ambition goes there ambition goes towards that next meal. Its not the size its the fact that they are in a way just so not interested in gaining power or dominating the world
